Biog House of Flora/ Flora McLean

Flora McLean is the head designer of fashion label House of Flora.

Inspired initially my Claude Montana, Pierre Cardin and Andre Courreges to study fashion design. McLean studied an MA in Fashion Womenswear at the Royal College of Art prior to establishing the House of Flora label. House of Flora specialises in avant-garde headwear for the catwalk, fashion campaigns and collectors. The headwear is often driven by materials; PVC, Perspex, felt, leather, wood veneer and nylon, influenced by strong geometry and historical figures as well as concepts in modern art. Flora shares a studio with artist father Bruce McLean in London. They often work together on projects and discuss aesthetics and colour decisions. House of Flora has now expanded to include a commercial range of fashion jewellery and eyewear. McLean's designs have been worn by Kate Moss for French Vogue, Amber Rose, Paloma Faith, Kelis, Helene Bonham Carter as well as being photographed by the likes of Paolo Roversi, Nick Knight, Arthur Elgort, amongst others. House of Flora has created pieces for Matthew Williamson, Blumarine, Rocco Barocco, Bruce Oldfield and most recently for Riccardo Tisci at Givenchy Haute Couture with an Orbital halo in Plexiglass Orchid. In an ongoing collaborative project with top hairstylist Neil Moodie, McLean has created ‘Iconic Heads’ - hairstyle hats made in felt and other fabrics. 'Iconic Heads' have toured to Colette in Paris, Bumble and Bumble gallery in New York and store Liberty in London.

Flora often ues fashion film to accompany the collection. Some of the films have been shown on show studio and also been part of Diane Pernets film festival. Floras legendary PVC beret was exhibited in The Victoria and Albert museum recently in London, as part of the Anthology of Hats exhibition with millinery guru Stephen Jones. Her work was chosen to show other hats in a showcase of avant-garde hatters in Millinery in Motion fashion show. The work of House of Flora is widely known in leading fashion press and the pieces are now exported to cool outlets worldwide, as well as to private collectors. McLean continues to push the boundaries of the future of hat design and teaches millinery at The Royal College of Art and is technical surgeon at The Architectural Association in London.

House of Flora S/S 2010

Looking with fresh (multiple) eyes to the biological landscape of the future,House of Flora S/S.10 takes as its inspiration the dangers facing the 21st century. The collection encapsulates the motif a protection from a world where the heat soars in a europe lain waste by global warming, where flies swarm in a constant white noise of buzzing, the only sound left. How will individual expression survive and evolve in civilizations ravaged by unstoppable disease,political oppression, economic collapse? The question of self-preservation is symbolized by references throughout the work to the insect-world. The resilient shell of a beetle able outlive a human after a bomb blast, the spider with eight-eyed vision, the mark of Darwinian survival of the best-equipped. It all informs the clean lines and signature graphic aesthetic of House of Flora's latest offerings. Channeling Fritz Lang's 1927 visions of 'Metropolis' Maria, real and robot unite behind mesh visors which appear delicate as dragonfly wings, daintily tied with timelessly elegant grosgrain ribbon, or affixed with functional press-studs. The palette is an acrid cocktail of candy colours, featuring mercurial silver, Listerine green and bubblegum pink. A fusion of biology and Barbarella takes place in sexy sixties Perspex hairbands and jewellery. Hexagonal shaped UV400-lens sunglasses in acid yellow and steel grey speak futuristic chic fluently under bleached white honey-comb helmets.

Millinery in Motion, a fashion show at Victoria and Albert museum on April 3rd 2009. Five milliners were chosen by Hat designing guru Stephen Jones, to show their work alongside his in the museum. House of Flora was one of them. This was the finale of the Hat Anthology exhibition curated by Oriole Cullen and Stephen Jones.

The hats were shown with sharp black dresses by Hanna Marshall.

"Floras World" and exhibition of House of Flora in March London Fashion Week. This took place in all three of Kabiris London outlets, Marylebone, Covent Garden and concession in Selfridges. The film Dress No. 1 was shown alongside the actual dress in the window and the hat movie, "How To Make a Hat" was shown alongside hat making tools, instructions and the new Spring summer collection. Selfridges launched the range of Sunglasses.

This film is another collaboration with Ponyboy films, promoting the House of Flora autumn winter collection 2009. There are a series of rubber and felt pieces with debossed type . Much of the decoration on the hats and jewellery, belts and bags are usable printing tools. This work was designed alongside typographer and printer Danny Flynn. Dress no 2 featuers in the film, a navy wool gaberdine, hand finished naval evening dress with detachable sleeves. This film was shown on Showstudio and has been chosen to be part of the Diane Pernet film festival at the Pompidou centre in Paris in October 2009.

This is the second film made as a collaboration between House of Flora and Justin Anderson at Ponyboy films. The films was made for show studio as a showcase for the House of Flora label. It featured the labels 1st dress. A printed cotton pinafore with intricate pleats and angular pockets.The film also features another new venture launching the first pair of spectacles. Other props include signature pieces like the PVC beret and plexi cuffs. The film has been highly praised by Alex Fury at Showstudio and was chosen for a film festival hosted by fashion Guru Diane Pernet when she saw it as part of Paris fashion week, this then travelled to the Guggenheim museum in Bilbao. This was a truly collaborative piece and could not have ben possible with out the hard work and creative ingenuity of the following people. Thank you.
